Time Management For Students

by Jason Tickbourne

Everyone says they never have enough time. Each day we are faced with dozens of tasks to complete and it is inevitable that we cannot complete every one of them. We only have so much time in a day and we have to do what we can which is why time management is such an important skill to understand.

Time is limited to how many hours there are in a day and some things cannot be put off until tomorrow. As a student you will be given time critical tasks that must be completed by a certain time and date. Late is no good and neither is unfinished work going to give you good results.

For students time management is a crucial skill to be learned and understood. There are so many distractions in student life that it is easy to forget all about the work until it is getting to be too late to complete it in time. Planning is crucial and setting a time period to complete the work in is vital to avoid being overwhelmed with the task.

By scheduling your work and having a plan of action you will be able to complete each part of a piece of work and be ready to move on to the next. This way you avoid a mad panic at the last minute as you struggle to catch up with all the work you meant to do a week or two before all the while knowing there is more work to be done. A proper plan enables you to finish on time and relax knowing you have given it your best shot.

It may sound boring but an organized schedule helps you and actually keeps you focused on the important tasks. It should also enable you to spend a little more time on some parts of your work if you need to without this meaning that some work doesn’t ever seem to get finished.

It is important that you plan properly and schedule your work. A vague plan will not be as effective or helpful. Proper planning will aloow leeway so that if one part of your work takes longer than expected you can adapt the plan and get back on schedule to complete the work by the deadline.

  1. Good points all. A schedule is certainly important and what I’ve learned as an all important first step to planning and scheduling is just getting all the tasks I need to do recorded in a trusted system. This relieves a great deal of stress because I’m not worried about forgetting something. And then, once a week I do a weekly review where I organize those tasks and get them on the schedule.

I’ve written several posts about my experiences with task management on my blog at http://johnkendrick.wordpress.com/how-to-gtd/ John

  2. Great article. From my experience, planning helps students to juggle the demands of study, work and social life. The first step could be drawing up a plan of your semester, when you have classes and when assessments are due. This will show you the busy time periods and help you to plan a weekly schedule. By planning your work and working your plan, you effectively use your time and lower your stress.

  3. Another addition to time management and schedules is looking at things we do to procrastinate and eliminating them as well.
