Horrible Scene As People Run in Every Direction

By Aj Gentry

The day had barely started yet as I watched the people come and go around me I got the impression that the living experience was driving them, pushing them along almost beyond their desire and control. It was difficult to watch their discomfort and the horrid way they raced about.

There were those in a hurry always rushing about jumping from one function to another while never really devoting enough time to anything to reach a point of completion. Then there were the people who had so much going through their mind that nothing would come out. They were easy to recognize as they stood blankly searching in their thoughts for what and why they were there that had escaped their overburdened mind..

In fact, I took a moment to list down a few of the personality and attitude types seen during the day that I attributed to the pressures and demands of their choice of daily living pattern and thought..

  • Rusher - darting about on the go.
  • Worrier - focused on what might be.
  • Sweater - expending lots of extra effort.
  • Complainer - lamenting about situations.
  • Frantic - almost paralyzed with indecision.
  • Among this chaos and confusion there would be some people who seemed unfazed. They seemed to glide along the floor and were rarely ruffled or perplexed. The reason these people were so much calmer and more in control of their situation and living experience is because they were able to tap into their natural inner calm and stillness.

This wasn’t some skill they had developed, but rather was simply their natural calm coming through in a time when the moment demanded it. It was and most likely always had been the natural response and pattern taken in times of pressure and living demand since childhood.

Think about it. You spend most of your time focused on things to do. Functions that are the root and substance of what life and living are to you. You do things and seldom have the luxury of time to devote to thinking about doing nothing.

In fact, why would you? Thinking about doing nothing isn’t going to help you complete the dozens of chores and daily tasks staring back at you from the moment you awake in the morning, or is it?

There are many cultures and people who practice the art of developing, cultivating and maintaining clam stillness in the individual. They usually do so because they believe this process helps to develop clarity and effectiveness in thought, decision and function. In other words if you are able to call upon inner calm and mental, physical and spiritual stillness you are able to think and see things more clearly and make more efficient and effective decisions. This usually leads to results that you see as closer to what you expected and better.

My eastern teachers used a term ‘ mushin no shin ‘ to describe the process of clearing the mind of thought during function. This fleeting moment of mental clarity allowed one to move and respond naturally to someone or some situation. The brain was no longer occupied with chaos and the confusion of ideas, fears and thoughts.

You didn’t think about what you were doing, but rather cleared the mind and allowed your body to do what it needed to do in response to any demand.

I was taught to sit for hours in seiza ( Japanese knee sitting position ) attempting to reach a point of absolute calm stillness. This exercise strengthened the ability to call upon natural calm and self-control.

What I found was that I no longer was pressured as much by the daily living experience. Big things seemed much smaller and little things didn’t bother me at all. In a moment of unforeseen crisis I stayed calm and made better decisions that resolved the situation faster and with much better results.

During my life I have had many instances where a human life hung in the balance on my decisions and actions. Death was only seconds away and there was absolutely no margin for error. There are few moments in living more demanding on the individual than a life or death situation and those of you who have been there know this all too well. If you are able to distance your thoughts from fear, doubt and confusion and remain calm while you deal with the circumstances the situation seems to work out far better in the end.

Instead of devoting all of your waking hours to focus on rushing about and doing things learn to dedicate some time to moments of discovering a fresh natural calm and a quiet stillness within. Put all of the noise, kids, bills and living concerns aside and take a few moments to quietly sit and develop your personal resolve, self-control and focused determination.

These few quiet moments of clear thought will change your life almost immediately.
