The Mother’s Dilemma: Should You Take Time for Yourself?

by Christy Cuellar-Wentz

Mothers typically think they are supposed to put the needs of their family before their own. Tending to other people first is a culturally accepted norm for women in our society. Anything short of this can be perceived as selfish, even sinful.

In actuality, you will care for your loved ones better by taking time to refill your own well. If you are constantly on call, with no time for yourself, you will eventually run out of energy. Giving yourself a brief time to tune in and recharge will help ensure you are able to respond to the very real needs of your children as well as the rest of your family.

If taking care of yourself seems foreign, think about this for a moment. You are a primary role model for your children’s lives. They will copy your actions more often than follow your advice. Many a mom has shed tears after becoming aware of the lack of self care they modeled during their children’s formative years. You love your children and want to do right by them. Therefore, you need to show them how to take care of themselves by taking care of you! This will increase their capacity to be healthy, well balanced adults.

Yes, meditation is proven to be a highly effective tool for reducing stress and increasing health, but there are thousands of other ways to take ten minutes for you. The important thing is to make a commitment to yourself and follow through with it daily. You could go for a walk, listen to some favorite music, take a bath, sit in the car (as long as you’re not driving!), look at a beautiful painting or view, or savor a cup of coffee or tea all by yourself.

If you are a stay-at-home mom who is normally with your child (or children) 24 hours a day, I encourage you to find a creative way to take an hour or two away at least once a week while your baby is being properly cared for by another adult. This will allow you some mental and physical decompression time. It’s amazing how much more you can appreciate the miracle of life that you helped create when you have a small amount of space that other people take for granted. Just being away for a short time can open you up to wholeheartedly enjoying your family even if you thought you were too tired to do so.

You may find unexpected benefits from following through with this self care technique. Certainly you will realize temporary benefits from having a few daily moments to breathe, but will be creating long term benefits as well. When your inner self begins to trust that you are going to continue taking time and space for yourself, your mood and even body image will improve. You are, in effect, saying that it is all right for you to be in the world! This will translate into healthier self-talk, wiser choices, and a more grace-filled, response-able presence as a partner, wife and mother.

Treat Your Skin to a Home Sauna

by Ana Dupas

There aren’t a lot of people who have enough time to relax in a sauna following a session at the gym. Even fewer of us have access to a sauna, period. If you aren’t able to make it out to a sauna, how do you find a way to experience the benefits it provides? Bring the sauna home!

A home sauna is a great addition to any home. It’s always there and unlike exercise equipment you can be sure that it won’t go unused in your home. It’s a worthwhile investment and it’s guaranteed to be enjoyed by all the family. Not only will it be a fun way to relax together but you can also enjoy the health benefits of your home sauna.

Saunas are basically an enclosed space with a heat source that makes them very warm; the purpose is to make your body sweat in order to gain some benefits for your health. There are actually two different types of sauna that you can choose from, which are a steam sauna or a dry sauna.

If you feel like your skin looks dull or tired then a home sauna could be a great way to restore a healthy glow to your skin. The toxins contained in your body are frequently a cause of any skin problems you may be experiencing. When you wash your face using a cleanser, it only affects the top layer of skin.

If you want a deeper cleansing of your skin use your home sauna to your advantage. It can stimulate the lymphatic system and help to eliminate toxins that tend to show up as dull or problem skin.

Do some exercise before you climb into the sauna to cleanse your skin. It needn’t be too intense. Just something that will get your heart rate up and produce a light sweat. When you’ve broken a sweat, it’s time to get in the sauna and relax for fifteen minutes.

Don’t spend more than fifteen minutes at a time in the sauna; take a break for a few minutes, then go back in, aiming for forty five minutes in total. After each session stand under the shower for a few minutes so you cool down. Don’t forget to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water prior to and during your treatment.

You’ll not only discover that your skin’s appearance is improved, but your overall health is enhanced. You will find that this kind of skin detoxifying session will help you feel more relaxed. It is a great way to ease stress if you’ve had a long day in the office and need a way to unwind and forget about all the annoying things in your day.

Time Management For Students

by Jason Tickbourne

Everyone says they never have enough time. Each day we are faced with dozens of tasks to complete and it is inevitable that we cannot complete every one of them. We only have so much time in a day and we have to do what we can which is why time management is such an important skill to understand.

Time is limited to how many hours there are in a day and some things cannot be put off until tomorrow. As a student you will be given time critical tasks that must be completed by a certain time and date. Late is no good and neither is unfinished work going to give you good results.

For students time management is a crucial skill to be learned and understood. There are so many distractions in student life that it is easy to forget all about the work until it is getting to be too late to complete it in time. Planning is crucial and setting a time period to complete the work in is vital to avoid being overwhelmed with the task.

By scheduling your work and having a plan of action you will be able to complete each part of a piece of work and be ready to move on to the next. This way you avoid a mad panic at the last minute as you struggle to catch up with all the work you meant to do a week or two before all the while knowing there is more work to be done. A proper plan enables you to finish on time and relax knowing you have given it your best shot.

It may sound boring but an organized schedule helps you and actually keeps you focused on the important tasks. It should also enable you to spend a little more time on some parts of your work if you need to without this meaning that some work doesn’t ever seem to get finished.

It is important that you plan properly and schedule your work. A vague plan will not be as effective or helpful. Proper planning will aloow leeway so that if one part of your work takes longer than expected you can adapt the plan and get back on schedule to complete the work by the deadline.

Top 6 Coping Strategies for New Parents in Tough Times

by Christy Cuellar-Wentz

A volatile stock market, unpredictably disastrous weather, home mortgage crises and tightening credit crunch all add up to increasingly difficult home environments. Some of the most at-risk members of our population include pregnant and postpartum mothers. They are already coping with tremendous hormone and brain chemistry changes, and have a biological imperative to establish a safe haven for their new charges.

Parental stress levels directly impact the stress levels of the sensitive young minds of babies and children. New mothers and fathers who find themselves overloaded and unprepared for the challenges that face them need practical ways to cope with the instability that can make the creation of a stable home life impossible. Here are some ways to help both parent and child:

1. Focus on the Present. It may be tempting to think about the list of problems stretched out ahead of you. This will only lead to a downward mental spiral. Instead, ask yourself if you and your baby or child are safe for the moment. If you are, take a deep breath and allow a moment of gratitude. If not, do whatever you need to do to get the two of you into a safe environment and take it one day at a time.

2. Be Honest. Ignoring your emotions or hiding your feelings can work against you. Whether you are mad, sad, glad, scared or some confusing combination of these, please know that it is O.K. for you to feel whatever is going on inside.

3. Make a Connection. You may not know it yet, but you are in good company. Reaching out to others and sharing your story can bring healing and comfort. Sometimes this is possible face to face, but other options are available. Consider connecting with an online support group. Knowing that just a single person or small group cares about you, even if they are long distance, can provide strength for you to carry on.

4. Nurture Yourself. Ask yourself what you love with each of your senses. What do you love to hear? What do you love to taste? What do you love to feel? What do you love to smell? What do you love to see? Write your answers down, and be creative. Spa days, massages and fancy dinners are great, but the object here is to find small but meaningful ways to nurture yourself every day. You may be surprised to find the variety of simple, inexpensive ways to bring pleasure through multiple senses. A cup of favorite tea or coffee can nourish your sense of taste, smell, touch, and even sight if you take the time to focus and enjoy it. Stroking a cat or dog can be tremendously soothing, nourishing your sense of touch and bringing a sense of connection at the same time. It is possible to become aware of beauty even in some of the harshest environments.

5. Attend to the Basics. You need to eat, sleep, breathe and drink water every day. Remembering these small, simple steps will increase your your health and vitality when you need it the most.

6. Ask Others for Help. This is no sign of weakness. On the contrary, you prove your competence by asking for help for yourself and your family when you need it. Do you need help finding information, food, housing, resources, or a supportive network? People might not know what you need unless you tell them. Don’t let your pride interfere. Give yourself permission to ask for help and increase your chances of finding the resources you need.

HT 7120 Model Massage Chair By Human Touch Review

by Steve Esquire

We are going to take a in depth look at the HT-7120 massage chair recliner. The HT 7120 is made by the Human Touch Company. They are based out of Long Beach, CA. We are going to look at the best features and functions of this luxury lounger. We will also touch on the warranty coverage. Here is our review of the HT-7120 massage chair recliner.

When looking at massage chairs, just beware of cheap imports that may have a lot of features at very low prices. The only way to get there is by substituting low quality parts. That will translate into more breakdowns and more problems for you. You are buying a massage chair to relax. So make sure you purchase some peace of mind by purchasing from a reputable company like Human Touch.

What is the warranty coverage of the HT 7120? Human Touch covers this model with 3 years on the structure of the chair. They cover parts for 1 year and you get 90 days labor. Human Touch offers in home technician service, but this comes at additional expense. Honestly, the warranty for this model is quite short when compared with others in this category. We are somewhat surprised with the coverage of this model, since our experience is it is fairly problem-free. On the customer service side, they are competent and turn around on issues if relatively quick.

One of the more famous features from Human Touch is the flipping leg rest. The leg rest has a flat side and a calf massager side. You can actually flip the leg rest to use the calf massager and then flip it back to hide the calf massager. This innovative and patented feature helps to hide the fact that your recliner is actually a massage chair. This enables you greater flexibility in where you can place the massage chair in your home.

This recliner comes with a full body stretch mode. The airbags in the leg rest ottoman will energize to squeeze the legs to hold them. The chair back will then start to slowly recline. As the chair back reclines, it will gently stretch out the body. This body stretch will bring more blood flow to the spine as it decompresses and rejuvenates your back.

Get some targeted heat with the dual lumbar heating elements of the HT 7120 massage chair recliner. These dual heaters target the lower back for relief of aches and pain. They also help to reduce swelling and increase blood flow. This is a good compliment to receiving massage therapy in this area as well.

Let us talk about the massage therapy of the HT-7120 massage chair recliner. The HT7120 comes with a 15 automatic massage which is adjustable for the upper back, lower back or full back. You can also adjust the comfort control to 7 different levels of intensity. You will also find 4 manual massage treatments. These manual treatments include rolling, compression, kneading and percussion. You have quite a few options to really target the areas in most need of attention.

The HT-7120 is a well designed and attractive massage chair recliner. It has an executive look to it. The oval base makes an attractive platform for this contemporary massage chair. We like the massage therapy of this chair, but would like to see better warranty coverage from Human Touch. We do like the fact that this massage recliner will compliment any room in your house. This is a solid massage chair and one worth investigating further.

Massage Chair Therapy Helps Relieve Anxiety

by James Knolan

If you suffer from bouts of anxiety, then you may find relief with massage chair therapy. Anxiety can arise from various causes. Whatever the events driving your anxiety, your body responds to it in known ways. For instance, you may feel chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath or even sweating. Your body has been programmed biologically to react and respond in certain ways. One effective relief of anxiety is massage chair therapy.

In numerous studies, massage was shown to reduce levels of anxiety and decrease stress hormones. This was the case for less serious anxiety, whereas, chronic forms of anxiety may require a more complete treatment. One thing is for sure; anxiety can be very debilitating and varies in intensity and duration in different people.

Anxiety is amplified by our thinking of the issues or sources of the anxiety. To relieve anxiety, we need to get our mind away from circling the problem. Massage is very effective in getting our mind off the problems at hand. It provides us a relaxing environment and helps to free our minds of these thoughts causing and sustaining the anxiety. Of course, it is always recommended to discuss your situation with your medical advisor and see what is right for you.

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissue that includes your muscles, skin and tendons. There are numerous massage therapies available in massage chairs. There are Shiatsu, Swedish, deep tissue, sports massage, reflexology, acupressure and many more. Each type of massage has specific applications and results.

When you ask people what they think of massage, they think it is something for the rich and famous. However, with massage chairs, massage therapy can be brought to the masses in an affordable and effective method. The massage chairs have a tremendous base of technologies and provide effective relief of aches, pains and soreness.

Massage chairs have developed a whole host of complimentary therapies in addition to massage therapy. One such feature is an MP3 player. Think how soothing it is to have your body worked over with a relieving massage. Meanwhile your mind is off listening to music that takes your focus away from the tension and anxiety of the issues you were just struggling with. This is just one of many types of complimentary features.

Massage chairs have full body massage capabilities. They provide effective massage therapy to your back, neck and shoulder areas. They have air massage systems that provide compression massage therapy to your extremities and lower body. These massage therapies are very soothing. You can target specific areas and concentrate on them for longer periods until you get the relief you want.

How would you like a good stretch? Some of the best massage chairs have lower body traction systems and some even can stretch your arms and shoulders. This helps to increase your flexibility. There are even massage chair recliners that have integrated heating elements. You can select to apply heat to different parts of body to suit your needs.

There are a great many massage chairs, sometimes perhaps, too many. This can be perplexing for those trying to navigate to the best massage chair to suit their needs. One important word of advice is to go with a top brand. Top companies like Omega, Sanyo and Panasonic have excellent technology and provide extensive warranty coverage. You will get years of anxiety free use.

Don’t let anxiety get you down! Massage chair therapy is the perfect compliment to relieve your tension and anxiety. Massage is excellent for relieving tight, sore muscles. It helps induce total body relaxation. This helps to free up your mind getting it off those thoughts that reinforce that feeling of anxiety. Break the cycle and start a new and healthy course of action with massage chair therapy.

How To Recognize Stress And Deal With It

by Mike Makepeace

If we didn’t have stress what would we do when faced with a wild animal about to eat us? We might just stand there and be eaten. Clearly that would be bad for the future of our species so we have the ‘fight or flight’ feelings when we are faced with danger. The problem is that we get those same feelings when faced with other, more mundane, tricky situations.

Our body reacts to stress by preparing for action. Either fighting or running but not for standing still and putting up with it. Our bodies release chemicals which will help us take action be that running or fighting but if you are in the office at work getting stressed by the constant phone calls you can’t fight them and running away would mean you lose your job and your income.

We all have complicated lives these days and while technology has brought great benefits it has also led us to a place where we don’t feel in control of our daily life. Our employer controls our income and we may worry that it could disappear at any time. The banks and the credit cards control our finances and can affect our financial situation at a stroke.

The problems of stress can be a factor in other health problems that appear because we are suffering stress. Constant and consistent stress may take a toll on your body and mind and leave you weakened by the drain on your energy reserves. The effects of stress can affect your health and should be reduced where possible.

Depending on your situation it may be that simply taking a vacation and getting away from work and the problems of stress in your daily life will be enough to allow you to relax and recharge your batteries. We have vacations so that we can rest and recover so take a vacation and allow yourself to relax.

You may have problems and stress brought about by your financial situation or it could be that family and relationship troubles make you stressed. It is unusual for problems to sort themselves out so you may need to get some qualified professional advice and take action to deal with the problems.

Nobody wants to be unhappy yet we take on jobs that we hate. We end up in relationships that somehow never turn out as we expected and we are always short of the money we need to do the things that we aspire to. It is a recipe for a life full of stress and it makes you wonder how we survive at all.

Stress Relief is One Button Away with a Massage Chair

by Steve Esquire

If you have stress, you are certainly not alone. Stress is simply the response our bodies have from all the demands placed on it. We have all felt the effects of a stressful day. We may have sore, tight or tense muscles, especially in the neck and back. Research studies show that getting a massage really helps to relieve all that built up stress. You may not have time to slip off to the day spa, but there are other options. One particularly effective option is to have your own massage chair.

Our bodies respond to stress with the fight or flight reaction. When we come under stress, the body prepares itself by mobilizing the major organs to support the body taking immediate action. The hands and feet are supported to take action. Trouble is most of the stress we now have is more mental than physical. This means our bodies are ready for physical action, but it never really occurs. We usually don’t fight or flight, but sit there with a pile of stress on our minds. The chemicals released by our body to take action do not have a proper release.

We are all hearing the new economic doom and gloom and it is scary. OK, so we know our stress levels are going up because we are faced with more troubling situations. This just means we need to recognize the balance is changing and we need to change with it. We need to find more effective ways to relieve and reduce its presence and affects. In other words, we need to find a new balance.

A massage has the attributes of the relaxation response. A massage helps your body to relax. Certain massages like a reflexology massage, for example, can actually reverse the stress reaction. Reflexology massage targets the trigger points in your feet or hands which help relax and calm the major organs. As the major organs relax, the rest of the body follows bringing total body relaxation. A massage also helps to bring greater mental awareness and clarity.

Let us take a quick look at two of the most important massage therapy techniques. Swedish massage and Shiatsu massage. These are different schools of through with slightly different benefit sets. Swedish massage uses a variety of 6 techniques to relax and energize the muscles and the body. Shiatsu massage uses a combination of acupressure, kneading and rapid chopping to invigorate the muscles increasing blood and lymph flow, while increasing mental awareness.

Now these two techniques have been masterfully reproduced by modern technology. Welcome to the new age of the machine! Top companies like Panasonic, Omega, Human Touch and Sanyo have massage chairs that provide these massage therapies and many more. They have acupressure, reflexology, deep tissue, sports massage. They also got you covered from head to toe. Stress has met its balancing partner with the touch of a button.

Additionally, massage chair companies are adding capabilities such as stretching, heat therapy and music. You can create a virtual spa in your own home. Remember your stress builds up on a continuous basis. You must create a relaxation response on a continuous basis as well. A massage chair is the most convenient and economical methods to achieve this. If you got stress, then start a relaxation response with your own massage chair recliner.

Teaching Students Anger Management Techniques

by Don Pedro

One anger management technique that never seems to fail is counting before you speak. The next time you feel the need to blow a fuse, take a deep breath and count slowly from one to twenty. Counting can be an excellent way to reduce the intensity of your anger.

The art of writing down what you feel whenever you are angry can help you control your anger. Anger management experts actually advise people who have anger issues to get a journal and document their angry emotions. Documenting your emotions can help you identify your anger triggers and prevent future negative outbursts of anger.

Don’t labor under the misconception that you can hide your anger well because it inevitably shows in one way or another. Anger can be reflected in the tone of your voice or in your attitude. Bottled up anger needs to be pulled out from under the bed and dealt with if you want to be free of it.

You can easily progress from feeling stumped by a certain problem to feeling extremely annoyed. To learn how to get angry less often, try and change your perspective. Look at every problem or obstacle that faces you as an opportunity for you to hone your problem solving skills. In other words, learn to use anger productively instead of destructively. This is a very smart thing to do as regards anger management.

Don’t beat yourself in the ground because you let out an angry emotion. The fact remains that it is natural human reaction to get angry. What distinguishes one human being from the next however is how that anger is expressed. Anger can be a destructive force if it is not expressed positively.

It is vital that you learn how to control your anger if you want to get anywhere in life. People have lost good jobs, model relationships and families because they have let anger erode all their sense of reasoning. You need to be aware of the fact that you can control anger and make it work for you instead of against you.

It really does not matter which setting anger is negatively expressed. Whether anger is unleashed in the workplace, home or school, it can extremely be demoralizing to you and people around you. Anger can make you lose your self respect and confidence if you don’t rein it in properly.
